It's been a busy year all round and the last few weeks I've been out and about at events such as Bridal Gathering in Newcastle, Nostalgia Meets Design in Penrith and local Christmas Fairs around Cumbria. “Fascinator Fun”
- Learn how to make a fabulous fascinator in your choice of colour and trimming.
£65 pp - Includes materials, coffee & lunch - 10am - 5pm
“Hat Tricks” With a few tips and techniques, this workshop gives you the opportunity to transform your old hats into fabulous new head wear. - Do you have old hats gathering dust at home?

“Creative Corsages” - A corsage can brighten up more or less anything it can be pinned into! During the day Sara will demonstrate a range of different techniques that will enable you to create your own hand made flower corsages. Great for Christmas presents, wow your friends with what you have created!

Hat & Fascinator Workshops

Hat Tricks at Higham Hall

Sara Gadd Millinery's debut workshop when down a treat last month at Higham Hall, the adult education centre in between Keswick and Cockermouth. What a wonderful setting for a workshop, in scenic surrounding, everyone is well looked after and certainly won't go home hungry!
During the Hat Tricks Workshop, students brought along their own old hats and we cut and re shaped them into fabulous new creations.

We were a small group, but that didn't detract from the atmosphere! Much fun was had by all and students from other courses were soon flocking to see what 'the noisy group' were up to!

It was a productive weekend with each student creating 1 - 3 hats each, so we had a mini collection of head wear to choose from when it came to posing for photos at the end of the day!

Here are some photos from the workshop, the next Higham workshop is Hats For All - Cocktail Hats, Friday 30th Sept - Sunday 2nd October.

Hat Tricks can also be booked here at the studio for groups of 5 people with lunch and tea and coffee included, at £65pp.

A Head For The Hat Season

It's a busy time of year for milliners, the wedding season's in full swing, garden parties are taking hold, race meetings galor and the one and only Royal Ascot just around the corner!

Here at Sara Gadd Millinery it's no exception and we are in a creative frenzie every day!

In addition to creating headwear, Sara has been spreading the 'hatty word' appearing as guest speaker for many local groups...it's been a busy season! It's been great fun meeting lots of new faces, handing our hat advice, oh and sampling many a wonderful cake!

Last month Sara Gadd Millinery teamed up with Pink Tulip Photography in a wonderful vintage bridal boutique photoshoot.

Make up featured by Bridget Foster and our bequtiful models were Jeni Banks of Mayfifteen and Michelle Serrechia.

Warwick Hall was our stunning venue for the shoot and we were so lucky with beautiful weather!

A collection of my family vintage pieces helped with styling the shoot which also included this wonderful vintage bike!

The shoots really created excellent results and I look forward to working with Pink Tulip again in the future.

Raising Our Hats To The Autumn!

Well it's time to well and truly wave good by to the Summer and raise our hats to the Autumn, with a crispness to the air and browning leaves starting to fall!

It's been a busy Summer here at Sara Gadd Millinery, so busy in fact that this is the first blog for 8 months!

My Summer ended with a much anticipated trip to Cyprus for a friend's wedding, a lovely time was had by all and the bride looked stunning! Congratulations Stuart & Katie Holden! The Bride and Bridesmaids wore Sara Gadd Millinery.

Returning home to rain and a cold chill hasn't been quite so dull though. It's been a busy week with a photo shoot at Crosby Lodge, a beautiful setting, stunning models, cheeky hats, wonderful photographer and champagne. Wonderful stat to the week! It was then time again to sew, preparing for a Charity fashion show on Thursday, organised by Susan Dowes of Genevieve. The event took place at The Shepherd's Inn in Carlisle, with funds going to The Eden Valley Hospice.

Living Statues before being entertained over lunch, with beauty demonstrations from Boyd Hair & Beauty, Carlisle, fall 2010 fashions from Genevieve and Country Dreams Bridal Wear, flower demonstrations from Bloomsberry, Carlisle, singing from Sophie, Sara Gadd Millinery demonstrations, magic from James, a member of the Magic Circle and Elvis!

It was a jam packed lunch date for a worthy cause!

With lots of projects on the horizon in collaboration with Dance Ahead it looks as though the rast of the year's going to continue being busy!

'NETS' - An International Textile Exhibition Spanning Countries and Continents

'NETS'
International textile exhibition in conjunction with the University of Cumbria, the Australian National University, Canberra and the Novia University of Applied Sciences, Turku, Finland.

The ‘NETS’ theme of the exhibition is entirely open to artist/maker interpretation and diversity is encouraged.

The launch of the UK strand of the exhibition will launch September/October 2010 and will take place at the Alexandra Gallery, University of Cumbria (Lancaster Campus); it then tours to the Knitting and Stitching Show in Harrogate in November 2010 (subject to final confirmation.)

Thinking Ahead ...

I'm currently working on the new bridal collection from Sara Gadd Millinery, which features hand made silk flowers, pearls, lace and feathers.

Dreaming up new ideas I usually look to both contemporary and historical headwear, flicking through magazines and online images for inspiration, this helps to get ideas flowing. I rummage through boxes of feathers, fabrics beads; generally make a mess, and the ideas start to come!

This Summer I have several dates for new workshop 'Hat Tricks' - If you have old hats gathering dust at home this could be just the thing for you!

Vintage Hats & Fashion 1979 into 1980

The year is 1979, December 1979, the location Chicago USA.

Putting myself in Mum's shoes this time 30 years ago, she was living high up in Lake Point Tower, Chicago, a new Mum; I had just been born on 25th December 1979.

Why am I doing this?

Back in 2010, (slightly less glamorously), I have been attempting to clear out the chaos that is the junk cupboard!

I've stumbled across some vintage magazines, L'Officiel USA The Magazine of International Fashion, issues October 1979, Holiday Issue 1979 and February 1980.

Ok some may think???! But for others, myself included, it offers a fascinating glimpse into the world of fashion 30 years ago!

Here are some of the vintage fashion images from the magazines.

The 'Fresh and sporty Looks from the New York Collections' look positively ancient!

...While other images could almost be from today.

Just look at the shoulders on this jacket !

Hats were still quite a feature in various different styles, mainly small cocktail styles, very elegant and chic.

The influences in todays fashion are clear to see.

This Wednesday 25th November at The Cecil Street Project in Carlisle, "Love Christmas" a street market with a difference is taking place.

It's the perfect places to get some Christmas goodies and presents, there'll be stores selling many different items from millinery to baby goods, ladies fashions, interior goods, dancing and more. There'll be refreshments available and you may get lucky and win a prize from the raffle!

Sculpting with Jane Smith

Last week I travelled up to Edinburgh to take part in a Sculpting Masterclass with the wonderful London based Hatter Jane Smith. http://www.janesmithhats.co.uk/index.html http://www.hatwalk.co.uk/

This was a great workshop - I recommend it to anyone with a back ground in millinery, it is both challenging and rewarding and at the same time quite relaxing!

Living Windows 2009

Last week shoppers in Carlisle may have thought they were going mad as they were treated to unusual happenings!

With hat trick demonstrations, live mannequins, living statues, and dancing madonnas!!

It was all in aid of 'Living Windows' celebraiting 25 years of The Lanes Shopping Centre in Carlisle City Centre.

Dance Ahead and Sara Gadd Millinery joined forces once again to organise dancers, dances and accessories with a living twist!....

The performers, students from the University of Cumbria, looked stunning and worked hard to achieve the look...thanks so much for your time and energy guys!

'Old Hat' Recycled Hat Exhibition

It's been another busy week....

Saturday 18th Sara took to the stage in The Lanes Shopping Centre in Carlisle and presented 'Hat Tricks' providing some great ideas for ladies night at Carlisle Races. Sara showed ideas for re trimming old hats and creating a fascinator with the trimmings!

On Thursday 16th July 'Old Hat' went on display at High Head Sculpture Valley.

This latest collection of headwear has been inspired by a recent period of work undertaken with Grampus Training and Heritage Limited, a local company who work with students from all over Europe.
Sara has been increasingly interested in the potential of using recycled materials to create exciting new pieces. Sara adopted a simplistic approach to create the designs, drawing upon personal skills and problem solving to transform recycled objects into ‘something else’. Each creation has been inspired by the recycled object in its original state with minimal use of additional materials. The potential for recycled fashion is endless!

Any body wishing to try their hand at creating something from nothing can enrol on a new ‘Fashion Junkie Workshop’. Participants will have the opportunity to make their own exciting creations from recyclables! Or if you’d like a more traditional approach you can try Retrimming an old hat at an ‘Old Hat Tricks’ workshop; the next one is Saturday 22nd August 10am – 4pm at The Studio in Corby Hill near Carlisle.

Grampus Workshop - Norse Inspired Hats & Headwear

During this recent workshop I worked with students from all over Europe at Grampus Heritage and Training Ltd. We produced hats made from a mixture of natural materials such as linen, raw silk, fur, hand made melt, woor, bone and metal.

Sara Gadd Millinery has been out and about again .....!

... I spent the start of this lovely sunny week working at Grampus in Threapland, Wigton, Cumbria, with a lovely group of hard working Romanian students.

This time we have been inspired by Vikings!

Expect to see Viking inspiration in my forthcoming autumn/winter collection, here's a hint of what to expect! (Here's my creation above!)

Working with hand made felt, natural fabric, yarns and fur we created a simplistic collection of contemporary Viking headwear!

We also had the luxury of working with David Watson of Moor Forge, who created fabulous Viking inspired brooches.

The hats will be worn with Viking inspired outfits. The students are in England working towards this project for four weeks and so far they seem to be having fun!

A great start to the week and a welcome break from the norm!

Hat Making From Found Things & What We Had At Hand In Cyprus

Reflecting upon my week in Cyprus I thought I'd share the stylish hats we created in just three days!
The following hats have been made by European students and myself in Cyprus, on behalf of Grampus Heritage & Training.

Inspired by traditional basket weaving, greece, yellow and tartan, the hats have been made with just about

anything we had at hand!

Some of the peices are

made from basket componants, others from drift wood or plants; they make for interesting

creations!

Akrotiri Basket Weaving

The women of Akrotiri have been basket makers through the years.

We visited a traditional basket maker in the Cypriot village of Akrotiri.

This traditional way of life is now endangered due to dwindling trade, and the traditional craft is at risk of disappearing.

The baskets were once used in cheese making and for olive pressing along with other traditional uses,however plastic equivalents are now replacing these beautiful items.

Projects like this are trying to ensure traditional ways

do not vanish all together and it is up to us all to help and support in any way we can.

Perhaps finding new uses and purposes for the baskets in today's modern society, be it functional or decorative, is a way forward. After all the baskets would look perfectly at home in any traditional or contemporary interior and mass produced copies simply do not compair.

Cyprus Trip – Working Holiday! Akrotiri

I have just returned from a jam packed week in Cyprus, staying in Limassol, working in Akrotiri and visiting Lefkara and Pafos!
The week has allowed me to indulge in creativity and craft, learning about local skills and traditions…..

Working with creative people from England, Scotland, Slovakia, Slovenia and Cyprus….

…All whilst guzzling Cypriot coffee with one or two ice creams, Scottish tablet, shortbread and other such delights! Really what more could a girl want?!

Well, what a busy week!
I'm offically calling this month 'Millinery May'!

Last week's article in the Cumberland News brought egar customers knocking at my door, each one hoping to find something stylish to wear at their spring weddings!

Watch out for stunning ladies coming to a wedding near you!

This season's fashion is hotting up with viberant colours, which in my opinion is a welcome injection of cheer in today's current climate! This week at Sara Gadd Millinery we have created an array different creations including a stunning butterfly hat in orange and magenta pink, a cream and gold tonal fascinator and a vintage velor bow headdress to name just a few!

It's great to see people choosing to enjoy hats and headwear!

Romanian Students - Hat Making - Recycled Materials!

Sara Gadd Millinery has been out and about working with Grampus Heritage and Training Limited and their current group of Romanian students....

Grampus Heritage and Training Ltd is a non-profit making organisation based in the North West of England. Since 1997 we have been involved in the management and promotion of European projects concerned with culture, heritage, archaeology and the environment.

Students created unique hats using recycled materials and found objects, their headwear will be worn for a fashion show, with costumes created in the same way!

They have four weeks here to work and discover hidden heritage within out culture!

On Sunday 3rd May my beautiful Mum & Dad celebraited their Ruby wedding anniversary with family & freinds!

I managed to sneek their wedding album & can now ponder over fashions & styles worn at their 1969 wedding! Here's to their Golden next! xxxxx

Tea, Cakes, Vintage Fashion & Hats!

Fun was had by all last Tuesday 28th April at Foxes Cafe Lounge in Carlisle, when a vintage tea party came to town!

Goodbye Norma Jean, a vintage clothes shop in Carlisle hosted the evening. Guests were treated to the most amazing cakes and baby ginger bread men displayed on vintage cake stands!

Sara Gadd Millinery also accessorised two of the models, who looked stunning wearing vintage ecclectic pieces!

It was so great to see people dressed up and enjoying nostalgic fashion!
